My father, may Allah Taala bless him with Mercy and Love, used to say that the things that take one away from Allah Taala are combined as Dunya. In the things that take one away from Allah Taala, there are feelings, thoughts, emotions, desires, urges, instincts, impulses and much more.
My father, may Allah Taala bless him with Mercy and Love, used to say that the word Dunya itself denotes what does it mean. Dunya means some thing inferior. The word in itself is feminine. Now every thing, from thoughts and feelings, to ambitions and goals, from senses of loss and profit to sense of pleasure and pain, and then all creatures of the Dunya, and every thing that stops us from taking steps towards Allah Taala is Dunya.
Allahumma Sali ala Muhammadin wa ala Aali Muhammad....
